5. Assess, provide feedback and report on student learningMy philosophy involves acting as a facilitator of learning and supporting children to take responsibility and ownership of their own learning. I believe assessment offers an important role in this by informing students of what the learning intentions are, what success criteria they need to meet to demonstrate that they have met the learning intentions. I also believe in utilizing assessment as a tool for students to identify areas for improvement and develop their own goals according to these.
Consequently, I believe that formative assessment has a pivotal role in the classroom and should be provided by self, peer as well as teacher feedback. This enables a collaborative process that promotes critical thinking and metacognition, which I believe is central to learning. As a result, when conducting assessments, I ensure that self, peer and teacher formative feedback is given as much as possible to enable students to improve their work and promote increased, deeper learning.
